How to position the SPIRIT sensor and how much area one unit can cover.
How should the SPIRIT sensor be placed?
Place the radon sensor so that the reading is representative for the people who spend time in the room.
Check the room for anomalies such as strong air currents, and whether the walls contain materials that emit radon. Then place the SPIRIT sensor:
- at least 30 cm from the floor and ceiling
- at least 1.5 m from supply air vents, exterior doors, windows, radiators, or other heat sources
- at least 0.5 m from exhaust air vents
- not in wet rooms

Before mounting the device permanently, make sure it has a working LoRaWAN connection.
How large an area does one SPIRIT sensor cover?
As with all radon measurements, the area a reading is representative of depends on how homogeneous the air is and on the radon source. Air homogeneity is affected by airflow and heat sources that drive air movement. The radon level at the source and the distance to the source also affect what the sensor shows.
If the air in a room is homogeneous, the sensor can be used for measurements covering up to 500 m². Note that this is per room/space. If the premises contain several rooms, radon levels can vary between them and more sensors may be needed.
For that reason, it is important to thoroughly map the premises with radon detectors before installing the sensor, so you know how radon is distributed in the building.
If you have completed a good mapping and understand how radon levels vary in the property, a handful of measurement points may be enough when the purpose is to monitor how radon levels change over time.
